The Hershey Bears made it
four wins in their last five games, defeating the Binghamton Senators
3-1 before 8,061 fans Saturday night at the Giant Center. Colin
Forbes (power play), Eric Fehr (game-winner), and the newly reassigned
Boyd Gordon (short-handed empty-netter) supplied the goal scoring
for Hershey (28-11-2-7, 65 points), while Frederic Cassivi (20-10-5)
turned aside 29 of 30 shots faced to earn the victory in goal.
Only a late-3rd period power play tally by Jan Platil spoiled
Cassivi's shutout bid, as Binghamton (17-23-2-2, 38 points) fell
to 1-4 against Hershey this season. Billy Thompson (5-12-1) suffered
the loss in net for the BSens, finishing with 22 saves.

Hershey puts the "ar" in Bears
with 4-3 win over Pirates
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
No matter how you slice it,
two points are two points. After allowing the game's first goal
for the second consecutive night, the Hershey Bears reeled off
four straight goals, only to have the visitors take command in
the last 30 minutes to make it interesting until the last possible
second. With Dean Arsene in the penalty box for a holding call
during the final minute of regulation -- and netminder Mike Wall
pulled in favor of an extra attacker -- Portland tried their best
to score the equalizer, but couldn't sneak one past Hershey goalie
Frederic Cassivi as the final buzzer sounded. Tomas Fleischmann
finished with 2 goals and 1 assist for Hershey, while Jared Aulin
pocketed his team-leading 4th game-winning goal, as the Bears
(26-10-2-7, 61 points) moved within 7 points of Wilkes-Barre for
1st place in the East Division. Cassivi (18-9-5), facing many
of his ex-teammates from Cincinnati last season, turned aside
a season-high 41 shots for Hershey. For the second straight game,
Dustin Penner paced the Pirates scoring, netting two goals to
give him four against Hershey this weekend. Wall (4-5-0), who
came in relief of starter Nathan Marsters on Saturday, took the
loss for Portland (27-11-3-3, 60 points), finishing with 23 saves.

Pirates walk the plank
Bears offense explodes in 7-3
romp over Portland
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
Nights like this can make
fans quickly forget about the previous game. Such was the case
on Saturday, when the Hershey Bears erupted for seven goals to
down the 1st place Portland Pirates 7-3 before 8,065 at Giant
Center. Chris Bourque led the offensive brigade for Hershey, collecting
a season-high 5 points, while goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck (8-3-2)
bested his former club by turning aside 21 shots. Meanwhile, Dustin
Penner (2 goals) and Ryan Shannon (3 assists) paced the scoring
for Portland (27-10-3-3, 60 points), who saw their 7-game point
streak come to an end. Nathan Marsters (14-6-2) took the loss
in goal for the Pirates, stopping 29 shots in 40 minutes before
giving way to Mike Wall in the 3rd period. Hershey (25-10-2-7,
59 points), who saw a 3-goal lead evaporate in Friday evening's
5-4 shootout loss in Philadelphia, now trail the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
Penguins by 9 points in the East Division standings.

Hershey melts in Philadelphia
Bears surrender 3-goal lead
in 5-4 in shootout loss to Phantoms
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
Three quarters through the
1st period, the Hershey Bears were sitting pretty. The power play
unit had just converted their third man advantage opportunity
in as many chances, and the visitors found themselves with a 3-0
lead. Before the 1st intermission buzzer sounded, the Bears were
up 4-1.
And then the 2nd and 3rd periods came along, with the
Philadelphia Phantoms erasing Hershey's lead one goal at a time.
Josh Gratton, usually known for his work with the gloves off,
potted two, 2nd period goals to lead the offensive charge for
the Phantoms (16-23-0-3, 35 points); while Jamie Storr (6-7-0),
who replaced starter Martin Houle at the onset of the 2nd period,
earned the win by stopping all 20 shots he faced in regulation
and overtime. He then stonewalled all four Hershey attempts in
the shootout as Philadelphia secured the come-from-behind with
a 5-4 victory. Hershey (24-10-2-7, 57 points) had impressive individual
performances by Lawrence Nycholat (2 goals, 2 assists) and Eric
Fehr (2 goals) spoiled with their third defeat in the last four
outings. Frederic Cassivi (17-9-5) took the loss for the Bears,
ending with 32 saves on 36 shots faced.

Bears ice Penguins in OT, 2-1
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

Jared Aulin picked a good
time to break out of a slump. The Hershey center, held without
a goal since December 9th, snapped a 14-game scoring drought as
the Bears defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 2-1 in overtime
before 9,437 fans Saturday night at Giant Center. Tomas Fleischmann's
turn-around, right-circle shot at 3:14 of the 3rd evened the score
for Hershey, who missed chances to assume the lead on Eric Fehr's
penalty shot attempt (at 14:20 of the 3rd), as well as a man advantage
with under 3 ½ minutes left in regulation. Goaltender Frederic
Cassivi (17-9-4) snapped a personal 3-game losing streak, turning
aside 25 of 26 shots faced as the Bears (24-9-2-6, 56 points)
improved to 2-4-0-1 versus Wilkes-Barre this season. Erik Christensen's
5-on-3 power play goal paced the Pens offense, with netminder
Dany Sabourin (15-3-1) stopping 36 shots as Wilkes-Barre (29-5-3-1,
62 points) dropped their third straight decision.

Wolf Pack submarine Bears, 4-0
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
Friday the 13th is one of
those days where people won't leave the house if they're overly
superstitious. Following Friday's 4-0 shutout loss to the Hartford
Wolf Pack -- in which a controversial 3rd goal led to the ejection
of Bears captain Boyd Kane -- the Hershey Bears shouldn't have
left the hotel. After an apparent Hartford shot rang off a Hershey
goal post, the goal judge signaled the red light, incensing Kane
-- a former Wolf Pack player -- to question referee Bob Langdon,
who allowed the goal to stand without conferring with any off-ice
officials. Rookie Nigel Dawes paced the Wolf Pack with two power
play goals, while former NHL 1st rounder Al Montoya (13-3-0) stopped
all 31 shots en route to his first professional shutout. Goaltender
Frederic Cassivi (16-9-4) dropped his third straight decision,
turning aside 34 of 38 shots faced as Hershey (23-9-2-6, 54 points)
was blanked for the second time in 6 days.

the Wolf Pack outshot the Bears 38-31
Hartford enjoyed 5-on-3
power plays of 2:00 (2nd period) and 1:20 (3rd period) in the
game. Hershey was unable to capitalize on a 5-on-3 man advantage
for :45 in the 2nd period
Alexandre Giroux, who tallied the

a 3-goal advantage. It was the 2nd penalty shot attempt Cassivi
has stopped this season
Bears Head Coach Bruce Boudreau tried
to earn his team a 5-on-3 power play at 12:55 of the 3rd. After

called for a stick measurement on a Hartford player; but instead
of gaining the extra man, Hershey was called for a delay of game
penalty when the stick checked out to be legal
Montoya, the

2 assists in the contest
Hartford -- who won the season series
2-0 -- has outscored Hershey 16-6 over their last 3 meetings

It took eleven days, but the
Hershey Bears finally earned their first victory of 2006, whitewashing
the Springfield Falcons 3-0 before 2,380 fans Wednesday night
at MassMutual Center. Tomas Fleischmann, Louis Robitaille, and
Chris Bourque each lit the lamp, while goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck
(7-2-2) earned his 2nd shutout of the season, turning aside all
22 shots faced as the Bears (23-8-2-6, 54 points) snapped a 3-game
road skid. With 25 saves, Gerald Coleman (11-11-2) took the loss
in net for Springfield (14-18-2-4, 34 points), who are now winless
in 11 straight contests (0-9-1-1).

Senators veto Bears, 4-0
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
Even with 11 power play chances
-- including two, 5-on-3 opportunities in the 2nd period -- the
Hershey Bears were unable to capitalize on the man advantage (or
at even strength, for that matter), falling to the Binghamton
Senators 4-0 before 3,987 fans Saturday night at the Broome County
Arena in New York's Southern Tier. The line of Jeff Heerema (2
goals), Grant Potulny (3 assists), and former Bear Charlie Stephens
(1G, 2A) accounted for 8 points, while netminder Kelly Guard (10-7-1)
stopped all 44 shots as Binghamton (15-18-2-2, 34 points) earned
just their 2nd win against an East Division foe this season. Goaltender
Frederic Cassivi (16-8-4) turned aside 26 of 30 shots faced as
Hershey (22-8-2-6, 52 points) dropped their third straight road
contest, falling 9 points behind Wilkes-Barre for 1st place in
the East.

It's the Tigers over the Bears
by a whisker, 4-3 in shootout
Last second score dooms Hershey
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
The Hershey Bears have certainly
had a flair for the dramatic in the 3rd period this season. The
Bridgeport Sound Tigers, though, took a page out of Hershey's
book, with Sean Bergenheim finding the back of the net with just
1 second remaining in regulation to force overtime. After neither
team could light the lamp in the ensuing 5-minute session, Hershey
and Bridgeport went to a shootout, where Robert Nilsson and Jeremy
Colliton would seal victory for the home team with back-to-back
scores in the 3rd & 4th rounds. After staking a 1-0 lead ten minutes
into the 1st period, Hershey found themselves down by a goal with
less than eight minutes remaining in the 3rd. That's when the
Joey Tenute Show began, with the 1st year-AHL'er bagging goals
just over two minutes apart to give the visitors a 3-2 advanatge.
After Hershey's Dave Steckel was whistled for hooking at 19:08,
though, Bergenheim -- in midst of a scrum in front of the Bears
net -- potted the equalizer with one tick left on the clock. Goalie
Cody Rudkowsky (1-0-0) -- making his 05/06 AHL debut after compiling
a 12-2-1 record this season with the ECHL's Reading Royals --
earned the dramatic win for Bridgeport (17-18-2-1, 37 points),
stopping 35 shots in regulation and overtime before making another
4 stops in the shootout en route to 1st Star of the Game honors.
Goaltender Frederic Cassivi (16-7-4), making his 25th start of
the campaign, turned aside 25 of 28 shots faced as the Bears (22-7-2-6,
52 points) dropped to 2-6 in shootouts this season.
