Mission accomplished. 16
wins later, the Hershey Bears are the 2005/06 Calder Cup champions,
having defeated the Milwaukee Admirals 5-1 in Game 6 of the
Finals Thursday night at the Bradley Center. Hershey, in their
first season as the Washington Capitals' top farm club, captured
the series four games to two. Joey Tenute would kick off the
game's offense, sending a diving right circle shot past Admirals
G Pekka Rinne at the 2:00 mark of the 1st period. Less than
four minutes later (at 5:53), Jakub Klepis would give the visitors
a two goal lead, blasting a right circle shot past Rinne, who
was pulled in favor of Brian Finley for the second time in the
series by Milwaukee Head Coach Claude Noel. With Libor Pivko
serving a tripping penalty for Milwaukee, Brooks Laich would
give the Bears a 3-0 1st period advantage for the fourth time
in the Finals, flicking a shot past Finley at 12:38.
Colin Forbes would propel
the Bears to a 4-0 lead 1:45 into the 2nd, with Milwaukee's
Darren Haydar erasing the goose egg with a power play marker
shortly thereafter at 3:22 Kris Beech would put the exclamation
point on the Cup-clincher by sinking a power play goal against
his former club at 13:15 of the 3rd. Goaltender Frederic Cassivi,
who was rock solid in net for Hershey during the postseason,
captured the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as playoff MVP with
his 16th victory of the Spring, turning aside 25 of 26 shots
faced.

Calder Cup Finals - Game Five
Bears on the brink
Hershey one win from Cup after
6-4 drubbing of Milwaukee
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports
joe@7641.com
Nine years ago to the date,
the Hershey Bears captured their 8th Calder Cup Championship,
defeating the Hamilton Bulldogs 4-1 in Game 5 of the Finals.
Today, the Bears stand just win shy of securing their 9th Calder
Cup, having defeated the Milwaukee Admirals 6-4 in Game 5 of
the Finals Tuesday night at Giant Center. Hershey now leads
the best-of-seven series 3-2, and can clinch the Cup Thursday
evening at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. Brooks Laich would
give Hershey a 1-0 advantage on its first shot 20 seconds into
the contest, coming from the backdoor and flicking a shot past
the short-side of Admirals G Pekka Rinne. Eric Fehr would pocket
two power play markers, while Kris Beech netted his first goal
of the game -- a man advantage strike -- to give the Bears a
4-0 lead midway through the 2nd period. Jordin Tootoo and Shea
Weber would net scores 68 seconds apart in the 2nd, while Libor
Pivko pocketed an even strength goal to draw the score to 4-3
at 6:12 of the 3rd. Mike Green's power play goal at 11:14 would
give Hershey a 5-3 advantage, but Milwaukee's Brandon Segal
answered three minutes later to once again make it a one goal
contest. After Bears goalie Frederic Cassivi stopped Simon Gamache's
point-blank attempt with one minute remaining in regulation,
Beech would seal victory for the home team with an empty-net
marker with 8 seconds left on the clock. Cassivi (15-5) would
finish with 33 saves, while his counterpart Rinne (10-3) ended
with a paltry 16 saves on 21 shots.

Playing hockey in June for
the first time since 1997, the Hershey Bears, fresh off a Game
7 victory over the Portland Pirates on Tuesday, dropped a 2-1
decision to the Milwaukee Admirals in Game 1 of the Calder Cup
finals Friday night at the Bradley Center. Down 2-0 in the 1st
period for the second straight contest, Hershey was able to
muster a late goal on Admirals goalie Pekka Rinne (9-0), with
Lawrence Nycholat potting his first marker of the postseason
at 16:54 of the 3rd. Even with goaltender Frederic Cassivi pulled
in favor of a 5th attacker in the waning moments of regulation,
Hershey was unable to push the equalizer past Rinne, who finished
with 36 saves. In the opening stanza, Scottie Upshall and Darren
Haydar (power play) would pocket scores for the Admirals, who
have now reeled off 10-straight wins. Cassivi (12-4) finished
with 34 saves for the Bears, who have lost 4 of their 6 last
games.
