Eastern Conference Finals
- Game Seven
Fehr Factor
Bears win one for the ages,
5-4 in OT

"Wow." Yes, sometimes, it
only takes one word to sum up a game. This, however, was no
ordinary game. This one was special, bearing the earmarks of
a classic Game 7: big hits; key saves; power play and short-handed
goals; a penalty shot; a fight; and most importantly, overtime.
All part of the nail-biting drama that unfolded in a memorable
Eastern Conference finale Tuesday evening at Giant Center. The
Hershey Bears, down 2-0 in the 1st period, clawed back time
after time on Tuesday, tying the Portland Pirates on three different
occasions before punching their ticket to the Calder Cup Finals
with Eric Fehr's second goal of the game at 9:07 of overtime,
bringing an already electric crowd of 8,261 to its feet in victorious
celebration. Mike Green, Tomas Fleischmann, and Graham Mink
would also hit paydirt for Hershey, with Mink stuffing home
a loose puck in the crease with 2:09 remaining in regulation
to knot the contest at 4-4. Goaltender Frederic Cassivi (12-3)
came up strong in the clutch, finishing with 33 saves for Hershey.
Portland's NHL reinforcements, Ryan Getzlaf, Dustin Penner,
and Corey Perry, accounted for three of the Pirates' goals,
with Penner bagging a power play and short-handed marker. Jani
Hurme (10-6) stood tall in the crease for the Pirates, ending
with an admirable 42 saves in defeat. The Eastern Conference-champion
Bears now head for their AHL-record 19th Calder Cup Finals appearance
- and first since 1997 - taking on former Bear Claude Noel's
Milwaukee Admirals, winners of ten straight contests.

With both teams playing
their sixth game in eight days, the Portland Pirates would emerge
with their second straight win in as many days over the Hershey
Bears, 5-3 to force a pivotal Game 7 next Tuesday at Giant Center.
With Hershey up 1-0 on Kris Beech's even strength marker at
2:15 of the 2nd period, Portland would answer just 51 seconds
later on Maxim Kondratiev's seventh of the postseason. Bobby
Ryan would net his first professional goal at 9:55 of the 2nd,
while Tim Brent collected a pair of lamp-lighters in the 3rd
before Beech and Graham Mink pocketed scores to cut the Pirates'
lead to 4-3 with under a minute remaining in regulation. With
Frederic Cassivi pulled in favor of a sixth attacker, Ryan Shannon
would tack on an empty netter at 19:47 to give Portland its
first win by a multi-goal margin in the series. Jani Hurme (10-5),
earning the start for the second straight game, swept aside
34 shots for the victorious Pirates. Cassivi (11-3) ended with
26 saves for Hershey.

A day after allowing a playoff-high
6 goals, the Hershey Bears resembled the team that began the
2006 postseason by reeling off 10 straight victories, blanking
the Portland Pirates 4-0 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference
finals Sunday night at Giant Center. Even though the Bears couldn't
stay out of the penalty box, at times, they were able to keep
the Pirates off the scoreboard, denying the visitors on 9 power
play chances. Jakub Klepis and Jonas Johansson would bookend
the scoring with their first goals of the playoffs, while Kris
Beech and Dave Steckel collected insurance markers as the Bears
marched to a 3-1 lead in their best-of-seven series with Portland.
Frederic Cassivi would improve to 11-0-1 in the playoffs, tossing
his second shutout of the series -- and fourth overall in this
Spring's postseason -- finishing with an impressive 38 saves.
Nathan Marsters (1-1-1), Portland's starter in Game 2, took
the loss with 27 saves.

Perfect No More
Pirates overcome 2-goal deficit
for 6-5 2OT win over Bears
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports
joe@7641.com
With the Hershey Bears leading
the Portland Pirates 5-3 with less than 6 minutes remaining
in regulation, many of the 6,511 Giant Center fans in attendance
felt confident the home team was on its way to a commanding
3-0 advantage in the Eastern Conference finals. Looks can be
deceiving, though, as the Pirates, owners of an AHL-record 27
road wins during the regular season, rallied for two goals 22
seconds apart to send the contest into what turned out to be
the longest game in Giant Center history. After a scoreless
and penalty-free 1st overtime, referee Chris Ciamaga would whistle
Hershey's Boyd Kane for hooking at 7:19 of the 2nd OT, where,
just 12 ticks later, Portland's Shane O'Brien would assure a
return to the Pine Tree State for Game 5 when his shot from
the right point found its way past Bears goalie Frederic Cassivi,
giving the Pirates a 6-5 victory and drawing the series closer
at 2-1. Dave Steckel, who pocketed two markers before leaving
with an injury late in the 2nd period, returned in time for
the 2nd OT and narrowly missed a scoring chance that would have
ended the game early in the 5th period. Instead, Hershey tastes
its first defeat of the 2006 postseason; a loss that can be
quickly forgotten when the two combatants battle in Game 4 less
than 24 hours later.

Bears torpedo Pirates in OT,

Hershey takes 2-0 lead over
Portland; now 10-0 in playoffs

After cruising for 38-plus
minutes with a lead in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals,
the Portland Pirates were riding high on an emotional wave,
enjoying power play after power play along the way. Dave Steckel
would halt that momentum midway through the 3rd period, though,
pocketing an even strength goal to tie the game at 1-1 and breathe
new life into the visiting Hershey Bears. Just 1:52 into overtime,
Graham Mink would officially take the wind out of the Pirates
sail, sinking his former club with the game-winner in Hershey's
2-1 overtime victory before 3,511 at the Cumberland County Civic
Center. Goaltender Frederic Cassivi improved to a perfect 10-0
in the postseason, turning aside 31 of 32 shots faced. Nathan
Marsters (1-1), making just his third appearance of the postseason,
was equally impressive in his end, finishing with 27 saves for
Portland. The Bears now head back to Chocolatetown for a pair
of weekend contests against the Pirates, holding a 2-0 advantage
in their best-of-seven series.

Game Four
Another one bites the dust
Bears finish sweep of Pens
with 1-0 thriller
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports
joe@7641.com
Call it a defensive display
by both sides. Call it a game of missed chances. Call it a nail-biter.
Whatever the case, call it one for the ages. The Hershey Bears,
playing with just four defenseman for parts of the 3rd period,
held on to blank the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 1-0 in Game
4 of the East Division Finals Tuesday night at Giant Center.
In registering their second straight four-game sweep, Hershey
became the first team to accomplish the feat since the 87/88
Bears, who went on to capture the Calder Cup championship. Brooks
Laich's 1st period power play goal would stand as the game-winner,
while netminder Frederic Cassivi tossed his second shutout of
the series with 27 saves. Dany Sabourin was impressive, too,
in goal for Wilkes-Barre, stopping 33 shots en route to the
Penguins' first four game losing streak of the season. The Bears
now await the winner of the Hartford WolfPack/Portland Pirates
series, which is knotted at two games each.

After building a comfortable
-- and somewhat shocking -- 4-0 lead on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
Penguins, the Hershey Bears allowed three straight WBS strikes,
hanging on for a 5-4 victory in Game 1 of the East Division
Finals Thursday night at the Wachovia Arena. Colin Forbes (2
goals), Dave Steckel, and Boyd Kane would give the visitors
a 4-0 advantage by the midpoint of the 2nd period, but Maxime
Talbot (2 goals) and Ryan Stone would answer for the Penguins,
including 2 short-handed markers less than a minute apart late
in the 2nd. Eric Fehr would tally Hershey's fifth goal -- the
eventual game-winner -- giving the Bears a 5-3 lead midway through
the 3rd, but Jonathan Filewich's power play lamp-lighter would
close the gap to 5-4. Frederic Cassivi (5-0) would earn the
nail-biting win for Hershey, stopping a mere 16 shots. His Wilkes-Barre
counterpart, former NHL 1st overall pick Marc-Andre Fleury (2-2),
suffered the loss with 31 saves.
