Steckel, Bears silence Sound
Tigers, 5-3
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
After a sluggish 1st period
in which they allowed 2 goals -- one from a right point shot that
eluded goaltender Frederic Cassivi, and the other 25 seconds after
they had tied the score 1-1 -- the Hershey Bears stormed back
with 4 unanswered goals to down the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-3
before 9,273 fans Wednesday night at the Giant Center. Dave Steckel
netted his second, 2-goal game in a week for Hershey (13-4-2-3,
31 points); with Boyd Gordon, Graham Mink, and Mike Green each
finishing with a goal and an assist. Cassivi (9-5-2), in his 15th
start of the season for the Bears, turned aside 25 of 28 shots
faced to earn the victory. Former Bear David Masse, Jeremy Colliton,
and Sean Bergenheim would pocket goals for the Sound Tigers (8-11-2-0,
18 points), while goalie Chris Madden (6-6-0) -- who spent time
in Bears training camp in 2001 -- took the loss for Bridgeport,
ending with 34 saves.

Norfolk anchors

By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

As they say, "All good things
must come to an end." Saturday night was no exception, as the Norfolk
Admirals sailed out of Chocolatetown with an impressive 1-0 victory
over the Hershey Bears before 8,187 fans at the Giant Center. Admirals
goaltender Adam Munro (5-4-1) was the story of the game, turning
aside all 30 shots faced, including many stellar saves down the
stretch. Norfolk's Quintin Laing would be the only player to find
mesh, beating Bears goalie Frederic Cassivi (8-5-2) on an open right
side midway through the 2nd period to give the Ads (8-10-1-1, 18
points) their first win over Hershey this season. The Bears (12-4-2-3,
29 points), who saw their 4-game win and 12-game point streaks come
to an end, were shutout for the first time this season. Hershey's
loss, coupled with Wilkes-Barre's win over Binghamton on Saturday,
puts the Bears 9 points behind the Penguins in the East Division
standings.

Bears roll turkey in 4-2 win over
Barons
Four straight strikes give Hershey
points in 11 consecutive games
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
After a lethargic effort through
the game's first 30+ minutes, the Hershey Bears broke out in a big
way, netting two goals 31 seconds apart in the 2nd period before
adding two more in the 3rd to down the Cleveland Barons 4-2 before
7,252 fans Wednesday night at the Giant Center. In what seems to
be a "Different player, different night" theme this season, Dave
Steckel led the way on offense for Hershey (11-3-2-1, 27 points),
netting 2 goals and an assist while goaltender Frederic Cassivi
(8-4-2) turned aside 19 shots to earn the victory. Pat Rissmiller
and Tim Conboy would give the visitors a 2-0 advantage before Chris
Bourque and Steckel would even the score before the curtain closed
on the 2nd stanza. Steckel had the chance to finish a hat trick
during the waning moments of the 3rd period, but he couldn't bury
a Graham Mink feed, hitting the left goal post. Mink would pick
up the rebound, though, cashing in with 2.8 seconds left on the
clock to make it 11 straight games in which Hershey has earned at
least one point. Dimitri Patzold (1-5-0) ended with 40 saves in
the defeat for Cleveland (7-10-1-0, 15 points), who are on a 4-game
losing streak.

Bears continue power play surge
Hershey drops longtime rival
Rochester 5-1
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
The Hershey Bears keep getting
the chances on the power play; and by golly, they're making the
most of them. Saturday night against Philadelphia, they deposited
a team record 7 power play goals. Sunday night, it was only 4
man advantage strikes
but good enough to sink the Rochester
Americans 5-1 before 6,379 fans Sunday evening at the Giant Center.
Boyd Kane (2 goals), Lawrence Nycholat (3 assists), and rookie
Eric Fehr (1 goal, 1 assist) led the way on offense for Hershey
(10-3-2-1, 25 points), while goaltender Frederic Cassivi (7-4-2)
-- making his 3rd straight start in net -- turned aside 37 of
38 shots faced as the Bears earned a point in their 9th consecutive
contest. Mark Mancari would be the lone offensive bright spot
for Rochester (10-7-0-0, 20 points), beating Cassivi on a delayed
Hershey penalty in the 2nd period. Well-traveled goalie Jean-Marc
Pelletier (5-2-0) suffered the loss in goal for the Amerks, who
lost both head-to-head meetings with Hershey this season.

Power plays punish Phantoms
Bears trounce Philly with team
record 7 man advantage scores
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
Today is November 20th, which
is close enough to be considered part of the holiday season. Saturday
night, the Hershey Bears graciously accepted power play-after-power
play presents given by the Philadelphia Phantoms. Taking advantage
of man-up opportunities throughout the game, Hershey torched Philadelphia
for a team record 7 power play goals en route to a penalty-filled
7-2 win before 8,562 fans at the Giant Center. 6 different players
would light the lamp for Hershey (9-3-2-1, 23 points), with Eric
Fehr, Mike Green, and Jared Aulin leading the way on offense with
3 points each. Goaltender Frederic Cassivi (6-4-2), starting in
net against Philly for the second straight night, turned away
16 shots to earn the victory for Hershey. Freddy Meyer and Josh
Gratton would tally markers for Philadelphia (6-10-0-2, 14 points),
while goalie Jamie Storr (4-6-1) -- also earning the nod in net
against Hershey for the second consecutive game -- ended with
42 saves.

Manchester beats Hershey, 6-5
in OT
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

Many adjectives and expressions
could easily describe Saturday night's affair in Manchester. Boring
and low-scoring were certainly not among those choices, as Lauri
Tukonen's overtime tally resulted in the Hershey Bears' 6-5 loss
to the Manchester Monarchs before 7,797 fans at the Verizon Wireless
Arena. Hershey (8-3-1-3, 20 points), who rallied from 2-goal deficits
on two occasions, was led on offense by rookie Eric Fehr (1 goal,
2 assists), while goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck (3-1-1), making
his third straight start in net, turned aside 27 shots in Head
Coach Bruce Boudreau's return to Manchester. Jeff Tambellini (2
goals, 1 assist) and Brendan Bernakevitch (1 goal, 2 assists)
paced the victorious Monarchs (8-3-0-1, 17 points), with netminder
Adam Hauser (5-2-1) earning the win with 42 saves. Even after
gaining a point for the seventh straight match, Hershey fell to
5 points behind East Division front-running Wilkes-Barre (25 points),
who shutout the Portland Pirates 6-0 on Saturday.

Cass to Caps
Green to Chocolate and White
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
Before they departed for Albany,
NY on Thursday afternoon, the Hershey Bears made a couple of changes
to their player roster. First, goaltender Frederic Cassivi was
summoned to the Washington Capitals, while rookie defenseman Mike
Green was sent down to the Bears.
Cassivi, 30, is the sixth
Hershey player to be recalled to Washington this season, joining
Green, Brooks Laich, Tomas Fleischmann, Nolan Yonkman, and Jakub
Klepis. In 10 games with the Bears this season, Cassivi posted
a 5-3-2 mark, with a 2.44 GAA and a .913 Save Percentage. He could
possibly earn a start in net, as the Capitals play a home-and-home
series with the New Jersey Devils on Friday and Saturday afternoon
(1 PM).
Green played the first two
games of the season with Hershey before getting recalled on October
11th. He made his NHL debut the following night -- which happened
to be his 20th birthday -- as the Capitals lost 7-2 to the Carolina
Hurricanes. In 11 contests with Washington this year, Green registered
no points with 12 penalty minutes. He made it back to Hershey
just in-time as the Bears headed north for games in Albany (Friday)
and Manchester (Saturday).
With Cassivi going up, Maxime
Ouellet -- who has been relegated to third-string goalie since
an early October demotion -- is likely to see time in net during
the weekend contests.
Notes: Nick Foligno,
playing for former Bears Head Coach - and dad - Mike Foligno with
the OHL's Sudbury Wolves, is currently ranked 32nd overall among
draft eligible players for the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, according
to the International Scouting Service. In 15 games this season,
the 17-year old has posted 5-11-16, with 50 penalty minutes
One-time Bears heavyweight Frank "The Animal" Bialowas (99/00)
will be among 25 former enforcers featured in the "Tough Customers"
trading card set, which will be released this week by In The Game,
Inc. Included in the base set are fan-favorites like Bob Probert,
Donald Brashear, Eddie Shack, and Link Gaetz. In addition to autographed
cards, collectors could pull Bialowas "Game Worn Jersey" cards,
which feature a swatch of material from a Bialowas used sweater.

Bears finally prevail in shootout
Come-from-behinds defeat Falcons
3-2
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
The Hershey Bears have certainly
had their hands full with rookie goaltenders this week. First,
it was Cleveland's Jamie Holden on Tuesday. Friday, it was Philadelphia's
Rejean Beauchemin. Saturday night, it was Jonathan Boutin, who
was making his professional debut for the Springfield Falcons.
Saving the best for last, the Bears came from behind to tie the
game with 2:27 remaining in the 3rd period. Then, after falling
down 2-0 in the shootout, Hershey stormed back with 3 unanswered
scores from Joey Tenute, Graham Mink, and Jared Aulin to stun
the Falcons 3-2 before 6,510 fired-up fans at the Giant Center.
Tenute and Aulin also netted regulation goals for Hershey, while
goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck (2-1-1) turned aside 26 of 28 shots
faced in his third start of this season. Rookies paced the Falcons
on both ends, with Ryan Vesce collecting 2 goals, while goalie
Boutin (0-0-1) turned in a stellar performance with 50 saves.
With the win, Hershey (7-3-0-3, 17 points) increased its 2nd place
lead over Philadelphia to 9 points, as the Phantoms dropped a
4-1 decision on Saturday in Wilkes-Barre. With the shootout loss,
Springfield (6-2-1-1, 14 points) now shares 1st place in the Atlantic
Division with the Portland Pirates, who defeated Lowell 2-1 to
jump into a tie with the Falcons.

Bears earn first win at Spectrum
in 2 ½ years
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
Maybe it was the raising of
the Calder Cup Championship banner. Maybe it was the fact that
they aren't as prospect-laden as in years past. Either way, it's
a win for the Hershey Bears, who came from behind to slip by the
Philadelphia Phantoms 2-1 before 6,406 fans Friday night at the
Wachovia Spectrum. Jonas Johansson (1 goal, 1 assist) and Joey
Tenute (game-winning goal) led the way on offense for Hershey,
while goaltender Frederic Cassivi (5-3-2) turned aside 24 of 25
shots faced as the Bears earned their first victory at the Spectrum
since 2/23/03. Triston Grant was the only Phantom to find the
scoresheet---pocketing his first pro goal to put the home team
up 1-0 in the 2nd period---with rookie goalie Rejean Beauchemin
(0-3-0) suffering the defeat with 24 saves . With the win, Hershey
(6-3-0-3, 15 points) stretches its lead over Philly to 7 points
in the East Division. Meanwhile, the Phantoms (4-6-0-0, 8 points)
dropped their 5th straight loss.

Fleischmann and Yonkman summoned
to DC; Bala signed
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
On Thursday, the Washington
Capitals announced that they have recalled LW Tomas Fleischmann,
and D Nolan Yonkman from the Bears. Fleischmann was leading Hershey
with 13 points (4G, 9A) at the time of his recall, and was in
the midst of a 9-game point streak. This is the first NHL recall
for the second-year pro from the Czech Republic.
Yonkman, who was assigned
to Hershey for a conditioning stint on October 22nd, played in
6 games for the Bears, recording 0 points and 15 penalty minutes.
The 6-6, 247 lb d-man began the season in Washington, seeing action
in 3 games before becoming a scratch in several contests.
Both are expected to be in
the lineup when the Capitals head to Philadelphia on Thursday
to play the Flyers at 7 PM. Locally, the game is to be broadcast
on Comcast SportsNet.
Meanwhile, the Bears announced
that they have signed LW Chris Bala to a PTO. Bala, 27, returns
to the chocolate-and-white, where he spent all or parts of the
last two seasons. He attended this year's Bears training camp
before reporting to the Reading Royals (ECHL), where, after a
short stay, he signed with the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals, registering
a goal in five games played. Last season, the Harvard University
grad notched 14 points (9G, 5 A) in 58 games for Hershey, including
two game-winning goals. Originally, he joined the Bears via a
March, 2004 trade from the Minnesota Wild to the Colorado Avalanche,
when he was acquired for LW Jordan Krestanovich. In addition to
Hershey and Milwaukee, Bala has also played in the AHL with Grand
Rapids, Binghamton, and Houston; and with the NHL's Ottawa Senators.
In 264 career pro contests, he's compiled 101 points (52 G, 49A),
although he entered the 2005/06 campaign with 259 career games,
just below the 260 needed to fall under the AHL's veteran rule.

Bears can't solve shootout,
lose 3-2 to Barons
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
Josh Hennessy redeemed himself
in a big way on Tuesday. At 12:04 of the 3rd period, he took a
tripping penalty that resulted in the Hershey Bears tying the
game at 2-2. As the final shooter for the Cleveland Barons in
the 5th round of the shootout, he beat Frederic Cassivi to give
the home team a 3-2 victory before 2,154 fans at the Quicken Loans
Arena. Goaltender Jamie Holden (1-1-0), making only his 3rd career
AHL appearance, played stellar in net, turning aside 35 shots
in 65 minutes before making another 5 stops in the shootout, earning
his 1st career AHL win. During regulation, Mike Iggulden and Patrick
Rismiller pocketed even-strength tallies for the Barons (3-6-0-0,
6 points), who never trailed in the contest en route to snapping
a 2-game losing streak. Lawrence Nycholat (2 assists) led the
way on offense for Hershey, while Boyd Kane (short-handed) and
Boyd Gordon (power play) deposited goals for the Bears (5-3-0-3,
13 points), who have dropped all 3 of their shootouts in the 2005/06
campaign. Cassivi (4-3-2) stopped 25 of 27 shots faced for Hershey.
