Bears drop preseason finale to Pens, 4-1

By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

joe@7641.com

In their final tune-up before next Saturday's regular season opener, the Hershey Bears allowed four unanswered goals en route to a 4-1 defeat to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Sunday night at Giant Center. Jordan Morrison, Tyler Kennedy, Tim Sestito, and Matt Carkner pocketed scores for Wilkes-Barre, while Andrew Penner and Jeff DesLauriers combined for 23 saves in net. Quintin Laing provided Hershey's only marker of the contest, beating Penner at 6:37 of the 1st period to give the defending Calder Cup champions a 1-0 advantage. Frederic Cassivi stopped 17 of 20 shots before giving way to Maxime Daigneault (9 saves) at the onset of the 3rd stanza. The Bears finished the 2006/07 preseason with an 0-3 record, while Wilkes-Barre ended training camp with a 2-1 mark - both wins coming against Hershey.

Washington Capitals Vs. New Jersey Devils

Devils dust off Caps, 3-1

New Jersey special teams shine

By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

joe@7641.com

Talk about irony. On September 17, 1982, the New Jersey Devils made their franchise debut in Hershey, PA, cruising to a 3-1 win over the Washington Capitals. Just over 24 years later, the Devils, making their first-ever Giant Center appearance, left Chocolatetown with another 3-1 victory… over the Capitals. New Jersey's special teams would factor in all three goals on Sunday, with David Clarkson (power-play), Olli Malmivaara (short-handed), and Zach Parise (5-on-3 power-play) supplying the offense as the Devils earned their first win of the 2006/07 preseason. Washington (1-1-1 in exhibition), playing without reigning National Hockey League Rookie of the Year Alex Ovechkin, avoided the goose egg when Ben Clymer's right point attempt found its mark with just less than three minutes remaining in regulation. Martin Brodeur, the fourth-winningest goaltender in NHL history, stopped all 13 shots faced in 30-plus minutes of action, while his replacement, Scott Clemmensen, ended with 20 saves. At the other end of the ice, Olie Kolzig, now in his 18th season as a member of the Capitals organization, turned aside 15 of 18 shots.

Game Factoids: Face-offs won (unofficial): New Jersey: 23, Washington: 24 … New Jersey finished 2-5 on the power-play, while Washington ended at 0-8 … The Caps outshot the Devils 34-18 … C Jakub Klepis, a member of the Hershey Bears' 2005/06 Calder Cup championship team, has collected 4 points over the last 2 games for Washington (1G, 3A) … The Capitals have gone just 4-29 on the man advantage during the preseason (13.8%) … After their first attempt at a fight was squelched by linesmen Derek Nansen and Mark Pare, New Jersey's Nathan Perrott and Washington's John Erskine dropped the gloves immediately after their coincidental roughing penalties expired late in the 2nd period. Both quickly shed their mitts, squaring each other up for a good ten seconds before trading blows in front of the Capitals bench. The bout, however, was short-lived and anti-climactic, with both players eventually falling to the Giant Center ice. After Perrott's short, ineffective punches to the back of his opponent's head had little effect, Erskine threw two wild rights that missed their mark, essentially ending the scrap … New Jersey registered only 4 shots on goal during the 3rd period … Among the former Bears to see action for Washington on Sunday were: Kris Beech, Tomas Fleischmann, Boyd Gordon, Mike Green, Klepis, Brooks Laich, Bryan Muir, and Jeff Schultz. Two likely new members of the 06/07 Bears, Alexandre Giroux and Chad Wiseman, played for the Caps … Brodeur last played in Hershey against the Bears during the 1992/93 campaign with the American Hockey League's long-defunct Utica Devils … New Jersey Head Coach Claude Julien started Brad Lukowich and Brian Rafalski on defense, with Scott Gomez, Jamie Langenbrunner, and Parise at forward … Washington Head Coach Glen Hanlon started Brian Pothier and Jeff Schultz on defense, with Beech, Fleischmann, and Richard Zednik at forward … D Johnny Oduya, who participated in the Capitals' rookie camp at Giant Center in July 2005, dressed for New Jersey … Notable scratches for New Jersey included LW Patrik Elias, RW Brian Gionta, and C John Madden. LW Donald Brashear sat out for Washington … Sunday's game was the third NHL preseason contest played in Giant Center history … 3 Stars of the Game: (1) Malmivaara, (2) Brodeur, (3) Clymer … Referees: Chris Ciamaga, Paul Devorski … Attendance: 4,255 … Hershey kicks off its 06/07 preseason slate in Philadelphia on Monday, facing the Phantoms at 1 PM at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ.

Veteran Capitals Netminder Olaf Kolzig blocks a shot aside during 1st period action.

Shortly before being relieved in the 2nd period, the Devils Martin Brodeur makes this save to preserve his shutout.

The Caps' John Erskine and New Jersey's Nathan Perrott tangle immediately after being released from the penalty box.

The Capitals found the net once during Sunday's match. This shot beat the Devil's Scott Clemmensen to the glove side.

My, my, how the time flies…

A quick summertime update

By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

joe@7641.com

June 15th seems like it was just yesterday, does it not? I had been working on a paper for one of summer classes at Louisville that sunny Thursday morning, feverishly pecking away at a laptop from my La Quinta Inn hotel room on the outskirts of Milwaukee. Little did I know at the time, but the next 36 hours would be a blur, watching the Bears capture their 9th Calder Cup Championship, finishing my Game 6 report and immediately hitting the road to get back to Hershey in time for the Cup celebration the following evening at Giant Center. Indeed, after e-mailing the game story and pictures to our site's webmaster, we checked out of our hotel around 1:30 Friday morning, and, merely running on adrenaline at that point, hightailed it back to Harrisburg, where we arrived about 5 PM. I calculated that of the 57 hours we were away from Central PA during June 14-16, 27 were spent in our rental vehicle (a Buick Rendezvous for those interested). Very tiring, yet very memorable!

Before we embark on the 2006/07 season, I wanted to thank everyone that continues to make this venture a success. That includes you, the readers, who have e-mailed me your well wishes, whether it was regarding our News & Notes page, or my Bear Witness features in the Bear Trax programs. They are very much appreciated, and we hope to bring you more of the same this year. As well, we'd like to thank the Hershey Bears management for their continuous support and opportunity to contribute to their storied franchise.

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and we'll see you next month for the start of preseason camp. The Bears will raise their 9th Calder Cup Championship banner on Saturday, October 21 against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers … but officially begin their Cup defense on October 7 in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton against the Penguins.
