Bears vaporize Phantoms, 5-1
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
The Hershey Bears ended 2005
the same way they closed out 2004: defeating the Philadelphia
Phantoms on New Year's Eve at Giant Center. And while the Bears/Phantoms
rivalry isn't as strong as it was in, say, 1997, it certainly
has intensified the last two times these Keystone State teams
have locked horns. In a game played before 9,815 fans Saturday
night, Hershey posted 5 goals -- and 5 fighting majors -- to down
the defending Calder Cup Champions 5-1. Mark Wotton bagged two
markers (including the game-winner), while former Phantom Colin
Forbes burned his former club with a goal and an assist as Hershey
(22-7-2-5, 51 points) improved to 3-0-1 against Philadelphia this
season. Goaltender Frederic Cassivi (16-7-3) earned the win for
the Bears, turning aside 21 of 22 shots faced. Stefan Ruzicka
would tally the lone score for Philadelphia (14-18-0-3, 31 points),
with goalie Rejean Beauchemin -- in relief of starter Martin Houle
(6-7-1) -- getting a no decision with 18 saves in 53:25 worth
of work. Hershey remains 5 points behind Wilkes-Barre in the East
Division, while Philadelphia -- who captured the AHL's top hardware
only 6 months ago -- sits in the division cellar.

For the second straight year, the
Bears sported special New Year's game jerseys, which were auctioned
following the game. The top 3 bids were: $2,100 (Louis Robitaille),
$2,000 (Dean Arsene), and $2,000 (Graham Mink). A Boyd Kane game-used
Bears jersey -- which featured an American Red Cross logo patch
and worn at the beginning of the season -- was also auctioned
off. The jersey -- originally sold online via the AHL's website
-- was donated to the Hershey Youth Hockey Association, and fetched
$1,300 on Saturday.
Saturday night's alright
for fighting, part two: After combining for 146 penalty minutes
in their last meeting on November 19th in Hershey, the Bears and
Phantoms followed that up with 116 total minutes on Saturday.
The first bout of the evening pitted Green against Philly's Wade
Skolney, who was responding to a big-league hit Green had laid
on Blake Bellefeuille moments beforehand. Skolney controlled the
fight, landing the only punches as Green stayed in a defensive
mode
At 2:55 of the 2nd period, Gomez sought out Skolney for
going after the normally-passive Green in the 1st. Unfortunately,
the bout was short-lived, with both players grappling and quickly
falling to the Giant Center ice
21 seconds later, Engelland
and Phantoms enforcer Josh Gratton faced-off near the left circle
in Hershey's zone. Both went toe-to-toe for a few moments before
Gratton threw some additional -- and unanswered -- rights that
found their mark, earning the decision
The 2nd period card was
rounded out with Gomez trying his hand with Philadelphia's Riley
Cote. Cote initiated by throwing a wild haymaker that missed,
with both rapidly losing their balance and descending to the playing
surface. Decision: draw
In the final match of night, Engelland
took exception to a Triston Grant charge on Hershey's Louis Robitaille
at 17:40 of the 3rd period, engaging the Phantoms rookie to "Go."
Grant earned the win with several lefts to start, and a few rights
at the end as Engelland tried to tie up his opponent.
Coming Up: Hershey
kicks off 2006 with a 4-game road swing, beginning Friday night
in Bridgeport against the Sound Tigers at 7:35 PM. The Bears are
4-0 versus the 'Tigers this season, including a 4-1 victory in
their last visit -- an 11 AM start -- on December 7th.

Bears fall to Admirals in shootout,
2-1
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
For a team that excels in
the 3rd period, the 2005/06 Hershey Bears' Achilles heel appears
to be the overtime/shootout frames. After a scoreless contest
through the first 41-plus minutes, the Bears finally broke through
early in 3rd period, with Boyd Kane tipping in a shot to give
the visitors a 1-0 lead. Just over 2 ½ minutes later, though --
while on 2-man advantage -- the Norfolk Admirals netted the equalizer,
with Jason Morgan coming up with his 2nd of the season. After
neither team could hit paydirt the rest of the way -- including
overtime -- the shootout period loomed, where the Admirals converted
on two of three chances to bounce Hershey 2-1 before 4,751 fans
Friday night at the Norfolk Scope. Goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck
(6-2-2), making his 10th start in net, turned aside 41 shots in
regulation and overtime as Hershey (21-7-2-5, 49 points) fell
to 2-5 in shootouts this season. Rookie goalie Corey Crawford
(7-8-1) was just as impressive at the other end for Norfolk (15-12-2-2,
34 points), finishing with 32 saves in 65 minutes, as well as
another 4 stops in the shootout.

Bears trap Rats, 4-2
Hershey makes it 11 straight
wins over Albany
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
Would you say the Hershey
Bears have the Albany River Rats number? Even after spotting the
visitors a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the 1st period, the
Bears clawed back with three consecutive scores in the opening
frame -- before adding another in the 3rd -- to defeat the Rats
4-2 before a sellout crowd Wednesday night at Giant Center. Louis
Robitaille notched a goal and an assist, while Mike Green and
Owen Fussey picked up two helpers to help lead Hershey (21-7-2-4,
48 points) to their 11th straight victory over Albany, dating
back to the end of the 2003/04 campaign. LW Colin Forbes, picked
up earlier in the day by Washington via Carolina, potted a power
play strike in the 1st for his first goal in a Bears jersey since
the 95/96 season. Frederic Cassivi (15-7-3) picked up the Hershey
win, ending with 17 saves as the Bears improved to 4-0 on Wednesday
games in 05/06. 41-year old former NHL netminder -- and current
River Rats Goaltending Coach -- Chris Terreri, seeing his first
action since the 2000/01 season, allowed all four goals after
playing the entire 1st and 3rd periods. Alexander Suglobov would
supply the offense for Albany (10-22-0-2, 22 points), registering
both goals for the Atlantic Division's cellar dwellers.

Play was halted for nearly 15 minutes during
the early stages of the 2nd period after Albany's Mike Sgroi attempted

with Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Ottawa, New York Rangers, and Washington,
Forbes returns to the town he began his pro career with in the
spring of 1996. Ironically, the #7 he now sports is the same number
he wore with Hershey 10 seasons ago. Peat, who collected an assist
in 5 games with Hershey, paid immediate dividends as well for
Lowell, collecting the game-winning goal and an assist as the
Lock Monsters defeated the Providence Bruins 4-2
D Deryk Engelland
and LW Robin Gomez completed Wednesday's Hershey transactions,
getting summoned from the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays. Engelland
and Gomez each spent lengthy times with the Bears in training
camp before getting assigned to South Carolina in the days prior
to opening night. Neither dressed for Hershey against Albany.
Coming Up: Before rounding
out the calendar year of 2005 Saturday night at Giant Center,

Wheels fall off as Penguins
embarrass Bears, 8-1
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
The day after Christmas, the
Hershey Bears resembled a holiday turkey, getting stuffed by the
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 8-1 in their most-lopsided defeat
of the 2005/06 campaign. 6 different players would light the lamp
for Wilkes-Barre (25-3-2-1, 53 points) in a span of just over
10 minutes in the 1st period; while 9 separate Penguins would
earn multiple points as the home team showed 8,306 Wachovia Arena
spectators why they are the American Hockey League's top club.
Dany Sabourin (12-1-1) earned the victory in net with 32 saves,
as the Penguins stretched their lead to 7 points over Hershey
in the East Division standings. Joey Tenute netted Hershey's only
score, while goaltender Frederic Cassivi (14-7-3) -- pulled in
the 1st period after allowing 4 goals on 8 shots, only to return
at the start of the 2nd -- took the loss as the Bears (20-7-2-4,
46 points) fell to 1-4-0-1 against the Pens this season.

Hershey reels off 3 straight
goals to down Wolves

For the moment, Bruce Boudreau
has bragging rights over his former teammate and close friend,
John Anderson. In their first head-to-head meeting as head coaches,
Boudreau's Hershey Bears -- behind 3-1 going into the 3rd period
-- rallied for 3 unanswered goals to best Anderson's Chicago Wolves
4-3 in overtime Friday night at the Allstate Arena. Joey Tenute
led the way on offense with a goal and 2 assists, while Boyd Kane
and Lawrence Nycholat (game-winning goal) each tallied a marker
and an assist for the victorious Bears (20-6-2-4, 46 points).
Goaltender Frederic Cassivi (14-6-3) -- chased during the 1st
period after allowing 3 goals on 9 shots in Thursday's 6-4 loss
to Grand Rapids -- turned aside 27 of 30 shots faced for the Hershey
win. Kip Miller, Colin Stuart, and Ramzi Abid potted goals for
Chicago (10-12-2-4, 26 points), with Tuomas Tarkki (5-3-2) suffering
the loss with 36 saves.

Donald. MacLean. Those two
words best describe the Hershey Bears' 6-4 loss to the Grand Rapids
Griffins Thursday night at the Van Andel Arena. The veteran center
supplied 3 power goals and 2 assists to lead the Griffins to their
fifth straight victory over Hershey since Grand Rapids entered
the American Hockey League in the 2001/02 season. The Bears (19-6-2-4,
44 points), who saw their season-high 10-game road point streak
come to an end, dropped their second consecutive game in regulation
for the first time in 05/06. In addition to MacLean, 11 of other
players would find their names on the scoresheet for Grand Rapids
(21-10-0-2, 44 points), with goalie Jimmy Howard (9-3-0) earning
the win by stopping 33 of 37 shots. Joey Tenute, Eric Fehr, Boyd
Kane, and Mike Green potted even strength goals for Hershey, while
goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck (6-2-1) -- in relief of starter Frederic
Cassivi -- took the loss after surrendering three goals on 24
shots.

3-0
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

Coming off the heels of recording
their first shutout of the 2005/06 campaign, the Hershey Bears
found themselves held off the scoreboard as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
Penguins blanked the home team 3-0 before 6,550 fans Sunday night
at Giant Center. Even after losing Head Coach Michel Therrien
this past week -- as well as 05/06 call-ups Erik Christiansen,
Marc-Andre Fleury, Michel Ouellet, and Ryan Whitney -- to the
parent Pittsburgh Penguins, the AHL's top squad keeps finding
ways to win. Recently reassigned C Lasse Pirjeta, as well as D
Guillaume Lefebvre led Wilkes-Barre (23-2-2-1, 49 points) with
a goal and an assist each in the game, while goaltender Sebastien
Caron (2-1-0) earned his 9th career AHL shutout by turning aside
all 32 shots faced. Goalie Frederic Cassivi (13-6-3) suffered
the loss in net for Hershey (19-5-2-4, 44 points), finishing with
34 saves. The defeat -- which snapped Hershey's season-high 6-game
winning streak -- dropped the Bears 5 points behind Wilkes-Barre
for 1st place in the East Division.

It was business as usual for
the Hershey Bears on Sunday. With 9 different players earning points
in the game, the Bears were everywhere, whether it was on the scoresheet
-- or on the ice as part of the "Teddy Bear Toss" promotion. It
took just 41 seconds for Brooks Laich to give the home team a 1-0
lead, which lead to 3,140 teddy bears finding their way to the Giant
Center ice surface. After allowing two Bridgeport scores only 67
seconds apart in the 2nd period, Hershey roared back with 3 unanswered
goals to down the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 4-2 for their 5th straight
victory. With the win, the 2005/06 Bears (18-4-2-4) joined the 1946/47
& 1996/97 clubs in sharing a franchise-record 42 points through
the first 28 games of the campaign. Mark Wotton, Chris Bourque,
and Dave Steckel also pocketed markers, with Graham Mink and Boyd
Kane collecting 2 assists each as Hershey ran their mark to 4-0

Reassignments lead
Bears past 'Tigers 4-1
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
After their 6-4 victory Friday
night in Binghamton, the Hershey Bears got a boost to an already-potent
lineup with the addition of Graham Mink and Brooks Laich from the
Washington Capitals. Saturday, the duo paid immediate dividends,
with Mink netting the game-winning goal, and Laich earning two assists
as the Bears bested the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 4-1 before 6,740
fans Saturday evening at Giant Center. Lawrence Nycholat, Boyd Kane,
and Owen Fussey also pocketed scores, with Tomas Fleischmann dishing
out two helpers as Hershey continued to earn points at a pace second
only to the 1946-47 Bears for the best start in franchise history.
With the victory, Hershey (17-4-2-4, 40 points) kept speed with
Wilkes-Barre, who romped Maxime Ouellet and the Manitoba Moose 7-1
Saturday night in Northeastern PA. Goaltender Frederic Cassivi (12-5-3)
earned Hershey's 4th straight win by turning aside 24 of 25 shots
faced. His counterpart at the other end of the ice -- Wade Dubielewicz
(3-9-0) -- finished with 21 saves as the Sound Tigers (10-15-2-0,
22 points) dropped to 0-3 against Hershey this season.

with 15 saves in relief duty. Coupled with Wilkes-Barre's first
regulation loss of the 2005/06 season, (a 3-1 home defeat to the
Manitoba Moose), Hershey moved within 5 points of the East Division's
top spot.

By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

A different day, more points
in the standings. That seems to be the recurring theme for the Hershey
Bears through the first 25 games of the 2005/06 campaign. Wednesday,
it was a 4-1 victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in front of
3,129 fans in a morning/afternoon affair at the Arena at Harbor
Yard. Joey Tenute (1G, 1A), Eric Fehr (2G), and Lawrence Nycholat
(1G, 1A) led the way on offense for Hershey (15-4-2-4, 36 points),
while goaltender Frederic Cassivi (11-5-3) turned aside 29 of 30
shots faced as the Bears earned a point for the 21st time in 25
contests this season. Former AHL goal leader Jeff Hamilton netted
the only score for the Sound Tigers (10-13-2-0, 22 points), with
netminder Wade Dubielewicz (3-9-0) taking the loss with 31 saves.
With former Bears G Maxime Ouellet earning the 3-1 win for the Manitoba
Moose (in another Wednesday morning start) over Philadelphia, Hershey
now holds a 12 point lead over the Phantoms for 2nd place in the
East Division.

Bourque named to
US WJC Team
Bears get the "Terminator"
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
On Monday, USA Hockey released
its roster for the 2006 World Junior Championships, which will be
held in Vancouver, Kamloops, and Kelowna, British Columbia from
December 26th through January 5th. Among the players selected was
Bears LW Chris Bourque, who will be making his second appearance
for Team USA in the 11-day tourney. Bourque is the first Hershey
player since David Aebischer in 1998 to go from Chocolatetown to
the prestigious tournament, which features the top players under
age 20. The 33rd overall pick by Washington in the 2004 NHL draft
is the only AHL player on the US team, which also features 17 NCAA,
3 CHL, and 1 member of the US Under-18 Team on its roster. In 16
games for the Bears this season, Bourque has recorded 13 points
(4 goals, 9 assists).
Also on Monday, the Washington
Capitals assigned RW Stephen Peat to the Bears for a conditioning
assignment. Peat, 25, has been bothered by injuries this season
(upper body, broken hand), resulting in just 1 game played for the
Capitals. In 130 career NHL contests (all with Washington), the
6-2, 220 lb enforcer has racked up 234 penalty minutes. He's also
spent time in the AHL, playing 41 games over 3 seasons with the
Portland Pirates. Hershey fans with a good memory will remember
Peat for dropping Bears D Jeff Paul in a fight from the infamous
"Blizzard Game" on 2/16/03. The "Terminator," as he's been dubbed,
will provide Hershey with an enforcer (albeit temporary) it has
lacked during the 2005/06 campaign. He is expected to be with the
Bears when they visit the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for a Wednesday
morning affair at 11.

Bears finally solve Penguins*
*But need shootout to do so
in 3-2 win
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
The opportunities were there:
10 power play chances (including a 5-minute major), the open nets,
the breakaways, the odd-man rushes, the hit posts and crossbars.
So what if the Hershey Bears couldn't hand Wilkes-Barre its first
regulation loss this season. And yeah, they may have needed the
shootout period -- which hasn't been too kind to Hershey this
year -- but the Bears still pulled out 3-2 victory over the Penguins
before 6,070 fans Sunday evening at the Giant Center. Tomas Fleischmann
(power play) and Graham Mink (short-handed) pocketed regulation
goals, while Mink and Boyd Gordon notched back-to-back shootout
markers to give Hershey (14-4-2-4, 34 points) its first win over
Wilkes-Barre in four tries this season. Goaltender Frederic Cassivi
(10-5-3) earned the big win in net for Hershey, turning aside
20 shots in regulation and OT, and another 4 stops in the shootout.
The Pens' Tomas Surovy (1st period, power play) and Jonathan Filewich
(even strength, 3rd period) would bookend the game's offense,
with netminder Dany Sabourin (9-0-1) taking the loss with 25 saves
in regulation and overtime, and another 3 stops in the shootout
round. Even though the Penguins (20-0-2-1, 43 points) couldn't
set a new AHL single-season record for consecutive road wins,
they did establish a new league mark for the longest road winning
streak in AHL history.

The good news: Bears rally to
earn point
The bad news: Hershey loses
to Syracuse in shootout, 5-4
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

On two occasions Saturday
night, the Hershey Bears had the wind taken out of their sails
or so you would think. That's not the case with this season's
group, as they again rallied -- this time, from two, 3-goal deficits
to force overtime and a shootout, where they eventually fell to
the Syracuse Crunch 5-4 before 6,334 fans at the Giant Center.
With Bears goalie Kirk Daubenspeck pulled after allowing 3 goals
on 7 shots in the 1st period, Hershey quickly struck just 50 ticks
into the 2nd frame, with Chris Bourque connecting on a power play
strike to cut the Crunch lead to 3-1. Syracuse would reassume
the 3-goal advantage midway through the 2nd, with Joakim Lindstrom
netting a short-handed, penalty shot marker after being hooked
by Lawrence Nycholat on a breakaway. Hershey would respond though,
with three consecutive tallies from Tomas Fleischmann, Eric Fehr,
and Jakub Klepis to earn a point in the standings. In the shootout,
Jared Aulin and Nikolai Zherdev would trade goals before Lindstrom
sealed the Crunch victory in the 7th round. With 2 goals on the
evening for Syracuse (11-8-1-0, 23 points), Lindstrom would earn
1st star of the game honors, while goalie Andrew Penner (4-2-0)
earned the win with 36 saves. Fleischmann (1 goal, 2 assists)
and Joey Tenute (3 assists) would lead the way on offense for
Hershey (13-4-2-4, 32 points), while goaltender Frederic Cassivi
(9-6-2) took the hard-luck loss in net with 19 saves on 20 shots.
