By Joe Shetrom, 7641

Despite blowing a two-goal
lead to the American Hockey League's worst club, the Hershey
Bears rallied to score three unanswered markers and down the
Binghamton Senators 5-2 before 6,377 Sunday night at Giant Center.
Matt Hendricks (PPG at 4:38) and Alexandre Giroux (at 14:20)
would register 1st period strikes before former Bear Matt Koalska
converted a breakaway attempt at 18:51 to cut the Hershey lead
to 2-1 heading into the first intermission. Charlie Cook would
knot the game at 2-2 at 3:58 of the 2nd stanza before Kyle Wilson
(at 9:27), Mike Green (16:13) and Quintin Laing (17:26) reeled
off 3rd period goals to send the Bears (35-13-5-5, 80 points)
to their 17th home victory of 06/07. Maxime Daigneault (15-4-0)
stopped 23 of 25 shots to tie Frederic Cassivi for the team
lead in wins while Kelly Guard (9-17-3) suffered the loss with
40 saves for Binghamton (17-32-2-5, 41 points).

Phantoms edge Bears 3-2
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports
joe@7641.com
Playing before a sold out
crowd of 10,630, the Hershey Bears dropped a 3-2 decision to
the Philadelphia Phantoms Saturday night at Giant Center. The
visitors would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st period on Ryan
Potulny (even strength at 5:47) and Niko Dimitrakos (power play
at 15:10) markers before Pete Zingoni closed out the Phantoms
scoring at 11:19 of the 2nd, giving Philadelphia (22-29-2-5,
51 points) just its second win in 8 games against Hershey this
season. Chris Bourque and Jakub Klepis would tally scores for
the Bears (34-13-5-5, 78 points), who failed to gain ground
on a Norfolk Admirals club that suffered a 5-1 loss Saturday
to the Hartford Wolf Pack. Jeff Pietrasiak (1-1-0), making his
second career AHL start - and first since Dec 30 - surrendered
3 goals on 15 shots before giving way to Maxime Daigneault (10
saves) at 11:19 of the 2nd. Martin Houle (9-13-2) earned the
victory for Philly, stopping 26 of 28 shots.

Daigneault, Bears blank Phantoms
3-0
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports
joe@7641.com
Getting offensive help from unlikely
suspects, as well as strong goaltending, the Hershey Bears
blanked the Philadelphia Phantoms 3-0 before 10,171 Friday
night at the Wachovia Spectrum. Defensemen Dean Arsene (game-winner)
and Timo Helbling (power play) pocketed their first goals
of the year, while Maxime Daigneault (14-4-0) tossed his third
shutout of 06/07 as Hershey (34-12-5-5, 78 points) improved
to 6-1 against Philadelphia (21-29-2-5, 49 points) this season.
Alexandre Giroux capped the scoring with an empty-netter -
his team-leading 34th goal - at 19:34 of the 3rd period to
bring the Bears within 5 points of 1st place Norfolk, who
was idle on Friday.

All good things must come

Albany snaps futility skid
with 3-1 triumph
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports
joe@7641.com
On the strength of solid
goaltending and a pair of goals 15 seconds apart in the 1st
period, the Albany River Rats defeated the Hershey Bears 3-1
Saturday night at Giant Center, ending a 19-game losing slide
versus the Bears that dated back to the 2003/04 season. Matt
Murley (PPG at 4:44) and Jakub Petruzalek (at 4:59) staked the
visitors with a 2-0 lead before Antti Laaksonen capped the River
Rats' scoring with a marker just 14 ticks into the 2nd stanza.
Kip Brennan would tally Hershey's lone goal at 17:32 of the
2nd - his 1st of the year - but the three consecutive strikes
and Tyler Weiman's (15-10-2) 35 saves prevented the Bears from
extending a winning streak against Albany (24-24-2-2, 52 points)
that began April 7, 2004. Paxton Schaefer (5-11-3), making his
first start since being reassigned from San Jose on Wednesday,
stopped 28 shots in a losing effort for Hershey (32-11-5-5,
74 points).
