Making their initial appearance
in Chocolatetown, the Manitoba Moose skated away with a 5-4
overtime win before a sellout crowd of 10,615 Wednesday night
at Giant Center. Dustin Wood ended the tennis-like, back-and-forth
match by firing a shot over the right shoulder of Bears goaltender
Maxime Daigneault with 7.5 seconds left in the extra frame,
giving the Winnipeg-based club their first-ever victory over
Hershey. Manitoba (9-8-3-2, 23 points) also saw goals from Patrick
Coulombe, Lee Goren, Yannick Tremblay and Jannik Hansen, while
receiving 23 saves from goalie Drew MacIntyre (3-4-2). The Bears
(13-2-2-3, 31 points), who have earned points in 18 of 20 contests
this season, received goals from Dave Steckel (power play),
Chris Bourque (short-handed), Jamie Hunt (power play) and Alexandre
Giroux, who extended his point streak to nine games. Daigneault
(5-1-0) suffered his first loss of the season with 23 saves.

Penguins spoil Giroux hat
trick
WBS mounts comeback in 4-3
shootout win
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports
joe@7641.com
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
Penguins sure know how to ruin a Hershey Bears hat trick at
Giant Center, don't they? Last season, it was J.F. Fortin's
trio of lamp-lighters on October 9; Sunday night, it was Alexandre
Giroux's three different goals (short-handed, power play, even-strength)
that weren't enough, as the Pens rallied with a Marc-Andre Pouliot
marker at 18:15 of the 3rd period to force overtime. After neither
team could cross the goal line in the allotted five minutes,
a shootout commenced, with Giroux missing the initial breakaway
for Hershey. Chad Wiseman and Joey Tenute would convert Hershey's
only scores during the second and fifth rounds, respectively,
while Tyler Kennedy (2nd rd) and Pouliot (4th & 8th rds) pocketed
tallies for a 4-3 Penguins (15-3-1-1, 32 points) victory. Jeff
Deslauriers (8-2-0) earned the win for WBS, stopping 18 of 21
shots in regulation and overtime, and 6 of 8 shootout attempts.
Frederic Cassivi (8-3-3) suffered his third shootout loss this
season for Hershey (13-2-1-3, 30 points), saving 29 shots in
65 minutes, and another 5 in the breakaway competition.

Bears overthrow Monarchs 5-4
Hershey withstands late rally
for third straight win
By Joe Shetrom, 7641

joe@7641.com
For the third straight contest,
the Hershey Bears jumped out to a multi-goal lead in the first
period. And for the third consecutive game, the Bears went on
to win. This time, though, the Manchester Monarchs made it interesting,
scoring two, late-third period goals to close the gap to a 5-4
Bears advantage. Despite their late charge, however, Manchester
was unable to light the lamp one more time, giving Hershey (13-2-1-2,
29 points) its third straight win before 8,895 Saturday night
at Giant Center. Alexandre Giroux would extend his scoring streak
to 7 games, notching two goals (short-handed and power play)
- including the game-winner - while second-year pro Chris Bourque
added a goal and two assists as the Bears improved to 8-1-0-1
versus non-division teams this season. Dave Steckel and Matt
Koalska would also pocket markers, with Steckel beating his
former Monarchs club at 8:22 of the 1st. Maxime Daigneault would
improve to 5-0-0 for Hershey, stopping 27 of 31 shots. After
Manchester starting goalie Jason LaBarbera was shelled for 3
goals on 10 shots, Barry Brust (1-4-0) would enter the game
with just over eight minutes left in the opening period. Brust
ended with 26 saves on 28 shots for the Monarchs (8-7-4-1, 21
points), while teammate Shay Stephenson earned 3rd star of the
game honors with a goal and an assist. Gabe Gauthier, Petr Kanko
and Patrick O'Sullivan also potted goals for Manchester.

power play goals less than two minutes apart in the first period
to give the Bears a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Barry Tallackson's man advantage marker for Lowell cut the lead
to 2-1 at 9:29 of the 2nd, but Eric Fehr's short-handed score
less than a minute later (at 10:16) would seal the Devils' fate.

(11-2-1-2, 25 points), stopping 27 of 29 shots while his counterpart,
Frank Doyle (5-6-1) suffered the loss for Lowell (9-6-1-1, 20

Bears rally, fall to Sound
Tigers in OT 4-3
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports
joe@7641.com
The Hershey Bears continue
to collect points, even if the end result is unsuccessful. After
rallying from a two-goal deficit in the 3rd period, Hershey
was ineffective in overtime, dropping a 4-3 decision to the
Bridgeport Sound Tigers Saturday night at Giant Center. Joey
Tenute (11:42) and Quintin Laing (17:53) potted goals to bring
Hershey even with Bridgeport, but Blake Comeau's breakaway goal
at 2:57 of OT stymied the chocolate and white's valiant comeback.
Billy Thompson provided plenty of help in net for Bridgeport
(8-5-0-3, 19 points), turning aside 41 of 44 shots faced, while
Robert Nilsson earned 1st star of the game honors with two goals
and an assist. Meanwhile, Eric Fehr extended his point streak
to 11 games, collecting a power play marker and an assist as
Hershey (10-1-1-2, 23 points) lost their second straight contest
to Bridgeport this season. Frederic Cassivi (7-2-2) suffered
the defeat with 24 saves.

Springfield ends Hershey road
win streak
By Joe Shetrom, 7641

The Hershey Bears saw their
8-game road winning streak come to an end on Wednesday, dropping
a 3-2 shootout decision to the Springfield Falcons before 2,157
at the Mass Mutual Center. Justin Keller would give the Falcons
a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission before Matt Hendricks
and Alexandre Giroux potted goals to give the visitors a 2-1
advantage at 13:43 of the 3rd period. Less than three minutes
after Giroux's go-ahead marker, though, Andy Delmore would even
the contest at 2-2, blasting a blueline shot past Bears goalie
Frederic Cassivi (7-1-2). In the shootout, Daniel Corso and
David Spina would light the lamp for Springfield, while Eric
Fehr netted Hershey's only breakaway tally. Rookie Karri Ramo
(5-3) turned aside 37 of 39 shots in 65 minutes, and another
four in the shootout session as Springfield (7-8-0-0, 14 points)
won for just the second time in their last eight tries against
Hershey (10-1-0-2, 22 points).

Phantoms burst Bears bubble,
4-1
By Joe Shetrom, 7641
Sports

It took ten games, but the
Hershey Bears finally lost in regulation, dropping a 4-1 decision
to the Philadelphia Phantoms Sunday evening at Giant Center.
Jussi Timonen would get the visitors on the scoreboard first,
taking a Petr Nedved pass and pocketing a power play goal at
8:43 of the 1st period. Eric Fehr would answer for Hershey less
than four minutes later, though, blasting a left circle shot
past Phantoms goaltender Scott Munroe at 12:31. Philadelphia
(5-6-1-0, 11 points) would run off three consecutive scores,
however, with Daniel Corso (game-winner), Don Morrison (first
professional goal), and Matt Davis potting markers to end Hershey's
point streak at nine contests. Even with a season-high 42 shots,
Hershey (8-1-0-1, 17 points) was unable to solve Munroe (1-3-0,
41 saves) after the 1st. Frederic Cassivi (6-1-1), back in net
for the Bears after Saturday's 33-save shutout over Syracuse,
finished with 19 saves in defeat.
