Bears leash Bulldogs, 4-2
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
The headlines will read that
the Hershey Bears defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs, 4-2. The bigger
news, though, is that the visitors played half of the game minus
two players, as Louis Robitaille (17:32 of 1st period) and Chris
Bourque (6:09 of 2nd period) left the game with injuries. In fact,
Bourque---hit by Hamilton's Johnathan Aitken---was stretchered
from the Copps Coliseum ice, but flashed the "Thumbs up" as he
exited the playing surface. Tomas Fleischmann (1 goal, 1 assist)
extended his scoring streak to 8 games, while Graham Mink pocketed
2 scores, and goaltender Frederic Cassivi (4-3-1) turned aside
28 of 30 shots faced for the victorious Bears (5-3-0-2, 12 points).
Corey Locke and J.F. Jacques paced the Bulldogs (3-6-0, 6 points)
with a goal apiece, while netminder Alfie Michaud (2-4-0) suffered
the defeat with 35 saves.

Bears claw back to earn point
...but lose 4-3 in shootout
to Marlies
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
The good news is that the
Hershey Bears earned a point on Saturday, coming back from 2 goals
down to tie the game in the later stages of the 3rd period. Unfortunately,
even after Hershey took a 2-0 lead in the shootout, three straight
Toronto Marlies shooters would beat goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck,
giving the home team a 4-3 win before 4,875 fans Saturday night
at the Ricoh Coliseum. Ben Ondrus, Andy Wozniewski, and Brad Leeb
posted goals for the Marlies (3-5-0, 6 points), while goaltender
J.F. Racine (1-2-0) turned aside 30 of 33 shots faced as Toronto
snapped a 4-game losing streak. Eric Fehr, Graham Mink, and Joey
Tenute lit the lamp for Hershey (4-3-0-2, 10 points), with Daubenspeck
(1-0-1) finishing with 29 saves.

Coming and going
Laich recalled to Washington;
Gordon assigned to Hershey
On Tuesday, the Washington Capitals announced
that they have recalled C Brooks Laich from Hershey, and assigned
RW Boyd Gordon to the Bears. In 7 games with Hershey this season,
Laich has registered 10 points (6G, 4 A), good enough to lead

League. He joins a Capitals team that is in desperate need of
goal scoring, ranking 29th in the NHL with just 20 goals scored
in their first 9 games of the 2005/06 season. Laich will be
with the Caps when they travel to Rochester, NY on Wednesday
for their first neutral-site, regular season contest in 11 years,
taking on the Buffalo Sabres at 7 PM from the Blue Cross Arena.
On October 14th, Laich compiled 3 points (1G, 2A) as the Bears
defeated the Rochester Americans 5-3 at the Blue Cross Arena.
He joins D Mike Green as Hershey players recalled to Washington
this season.
Gordon, who turned 22 on October 19th,
appeared in all 9 of Washington's regular season games this
season, going scoreless with 4 penalty minutes. His experience
prior to the 05/06 campaign includes 4 seasons with the Red

current Bears RW Jakub Klepis (taken 16th overall by Ottawa).
Gordon joins G Maxime Ouellet and D Nolan Yonkman as Washington

Wolf Pack take wild one over
Bears 6-5
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
They may have been down, but
the Hershey Bears certainly were not out on Saturday evening.
Even after Hartford saddled the Bears with a 6-2 deficit, Hershey
rallied with three scores in the later stages of the 3rd period,
but couldn't net the equalizer as the Wolf Pack left Chocolatetown
with a 6-5 win before 6,116 at the Giant Center. Graham Mink (2
goals), Tomas Fleischmann and Lawrence Nycholat (1G, 1A), and
Chris Bourque (2 assists) led the way on offense for Hershey (3-2-0-1,
7 points), while goaltender Frederic Cassivi (2-2-0-1)---who replaced
starter Maxime Ouellet early in the 3rd period---suffered the
hard-luck loss, allowing only the game-winning tally in his near-20
minutes of action. Dwight Helminen and Nigel Dawes each registered
a goal and an assist, while Thomas Pock collected 2 assists and
Chris Holt (1-2-0) turned aside 41 shots as Hartford (2-2-1-0,
5 points) snapped a 3-game losing streak; and in turn, ended Hershey's
3-game winning streak.

Saturday's alright for
fighting: The game featured 3 fights, beginning with Dwayne
Zinger and Martin Grenier exchanging blows at the end of the 1st
period. The donnybrook occurred after Hartford's Ryan Hollweg
leveled Robitaille near the Hershey bench, resulting in a scrum
involving several players on both sides. Grenier looked strong
in the first half, throwing several unanswered lefts that found
their mark. Zinger came on in the second half, landing a few rights.
Decision: Grenier
Louis Robitaille and Craig Weller went at
the 2:51 mark of the 3rd, with Weller getting the takedown in
a quasi-wrestling match. Weller also earned instigator and 10-minute
misconduct penalties
Arsene and Joe Rullier finished the evening's
extracurricular activities at 13:16 of the 3rd. Moments before,
Arsene had dropped his gloves in attempt to go with Wolf Pack
C Alexandre Giroux, who did not oblige. Arsene did not get whistled
for the glove-drop, but during the lull in action, found a willing
partner in Rullier near the Hershey blueline. The Bears d-man
got his mitts off quickly, catching the 'Pack defender with a
couple of shots before Rullier landed on top of Arsene, hitting
the defenseman several times as he was on the ice.

Bears bag 4 PP goals en route
to 4-3 win in Binghamton
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

For the second straight game,
the Hershey Bears surrendered a 3-0 lead, as the Binghamton Senators
stormed back to tie the game on a Joe Cullen short-handed score
from 150 feet away during the 3rd period. Only 17 seconds later
though, Hershey would silence the Broome County Veterans Memorial
Arena crowd, with Tomas Fleischmann pocketing a power play score
to give the visiting Bears a 4-3 lead that would hold for the
final 5 ½ minutes of the game. Hershey (3-1-0-1, 7 points) has
now won three consecutive contests, something they did not accomplish
last season until late December. Former B-Sen Brooks Laich led
the way on offense for Hershey, potting 2 man advantage scores
against his former team, while goaltender Frederic Cassivi (2-1-0-1)
turned aside 28 of 31 shots faced. Filip Novak paced the Senators
(0-2-1-0, 1 point) with a goal and an assist, while goalie Billy
Thompson (0-2-1) finished with 25 saves.

Boyd's Bears
Veteran Kane named captain for
05/06 season
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
On Wednesday, Bears President/General
Manager Doug Yingst, as well as the Hershey coaching staff, announced
that RW Boyd Kane has been named captain for the 2005/06 campaign.
Kane, 27, will assume a role he's very familiar with, having served
as captain the three prior seasons between the Springfield Falcons
(02/03) and the Philadelphia Phantoms ('03-'05). Last season,
he led his Phantoms club to the Calder Cup Championship, sweeping
the Chicago Wolves in four straight games. Kane joins former defensemen
Brett Clark ('03-'05) and Brent Thompson (02/03) as the only captains
the Bears have known since the team moved to the Giant Center
in 2002. He had worn an alternate captain's "A" in the two previous
games this season, but will don the "C" for the first time when
Hershey visits Rochester Friday night at 7:30 PM.
In addition, the Bears announced
that defensemen J.F. Fortin and Lawrence Nycholat will serve as
alternate captains for all home games this season, while RW Graham
Mink and D Mark Wotton will sport the "A" on all road contests
in 05/06. If any of the alternates would be injured or recalled,
defensemen Dean Arsene and Dwayne Zinger would become alternates.

Rookie d-man gets recalled to Capitals
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
On Tuesday, the Washington
Capitals announced that they have recalled rookie defenseman Mike
Green from the Bears. Green, who will turn 20 on Wednesday, was
summoned to the nation's capital after RW Stephen Peat went down
with an upper body injury. After a strong training camp, he was
one of the last cuts before the Capitals opened the regular season
against Columbus on October 5th. In two games in Hershey this
season, he registered zero points and two penalty minutes. The
former 1st round pick is expected to make his NHL regular season
debut when the Capitals travel to Carolina to take on the Hurricanes
Wednesday at 7 PM.
Bears on the move:
Former Bears captain Brad Larsen ('97-'01, '02-'04) was sent down
to the Chicago Wolves on Tuesday
Chris Bala ('03-'05), who most
recently spent time in this year's Bears camp before getting reassigned
to the Reading Royals (ECHL) last week, has signed a PTO with
the Milwaukee Admirals
Brad Norton (01/02), who was cut recently
from the LA Kings, has signed with Jokerit in Finland
Nicolas
Corbeil, who joined Hershey late last season, was released from
his PTO with the Houston Aeros.

Fortin's 'Trick not enough
Bears drop second straight with 4-3 shootout
loss to Wilkes-Barre
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
First, the good news: the
Hershey Bears scored 3 power play goals, all by defenseman J.F.
Fortin. The bad news: the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (3-0-0,
6 points) erased a 2-goal deficit and pocketed 3 straight scores
before winning 4-3 in a 6-round shootout Sunday evening at the
Giant Center. Fortin, who's hat trick was the first of his career,
led the way on offense for Hershey, while goaltender Frederic
Cassivi (0-1-1) turned aside 32 of 35 shots faced. Michel Ouellet,
who pocketed the winning tally in the shootout, finished with
a goal and an assist, while netminder Dany Sabourin (1-0-0) stopped
31 of 34 shots in his first start of the season. Hershey (0-1-1,
1 point) has now lost 8 straight games, dating back to the 2004/05
campaign.

Notes:
On Thursday, the Bears trimmed their roster by sending hard-nosed
left winger Robin Gomez to South Carolina. In the same afternoon,
Washington recalled Miroslav Zalesak, who had just reported to Hershey
the day before
A rumor is circulating that G Maxime Ouellet has
been placed on waivers by the Capitals, and will be assigned to
Hershey if he clears
The Bears roster is lined with five former
1st round picks (Eric Fehr, Mike Green, Jonas Johansson, Jakub Klepis,
Dave Steckel), as well as four former 2nd rounders (Jared Aulin,
Chris Bourque, JF Fortin, Cutta). On the other side of the coin,
there are seven players who were not drafted by an NHL club (Dean
Arsene, Eric Labelle, Graham Mink, Lawrence Nycholat, Louis Robitaille,
Martin Wilde, Dwayne Zinger)
Bourque and Green, two early-season
rookie-of-the-year candidates, will be the first pair of teenagers
to play for Hershey in the same season since the trio of Jeff Chychrun,
Brian Dobbin, and Greg Smyth did it in the spring of 1986
In what
is likely a first in Bears history, two players on the same team
share the same birthdate, with centers Aulin and Steckel each sporting
March 15th, 1982 on their birth certificates. Not to be outdone,
LW Robitaille was born the following day (3-16-82)
Hershey last
opened the season at home in 2001, losing 5-2 to Worcester in what
was the final home opener at Hershey Park Arena
the last time
the Bears hosted a home opener on a Sunday was on 10-8-95, when
the Carolina Monarchs left Chocolatetown with a 6-3 win
Hershey
is 33-30-4 all-time on opening night, and sport a career mark of

Washingto cuts impact Hershey
roster
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports

3 PM came and went on Tuesday,
with no immediate press releases from the Washington Capitals
formally announcing their opening night roster. When it was released
though, there were no major surprises. Hershey, who already boasted
an impressive defensive corps, received a shot in the arm with
the addition of three more blueliners: Jakub Cutta, rookie Mike
Green, and former AHL All-Star Lawrence Nycholat. Also, right
winger---and former AHL All-Star---Miroslav Zalesak was assigned
to the Bears. With Zalesak, Hershey's roster now stands with 6
veterans, one over the AHL limit. The status of Zalesak playing
in Chocolatetown is uncertain, as the veteran of 268 AHL/NHL games
has a clause in his contract that allows him to return to Europe
if sent to the AHL. Even with the releases of LW Chris Bala, and
Ds Deryk Engelland and Jeff State, the Bears docket is now at
27 players. Obviously, some Hershey cuts will likely occur before
Saturday's season opener in Wilkes-Barre, with a goaltender and
at least one defenseman and forward getting the pink slip. Stay
tuned
Notes: Also on Tuesday,
the Capitals plucked G Brent Johnson from waivers, selecting the
one-time Blues and Coyotes netminder from Vancouver. It is not
yet known if Washington is looking to move either Gs Olaf Kolzig
or Maxime Ouellet
Zalesak finished with 75 points during the
2003/04 campaign, tied with former Bear Eric Perrin for 3rd place
in AHL scoring. His 35 goals that season led the Cleveland Barons,
and were good enough for 3rd in the circuit
Nycholat played
alongside Bears D Dean Arsene with the Hartford Wolf Pack in 02/03
Former Bear Raitis Ivanans (00/01) made the Montreal Canadiens
opening night roster
on Tuesday, the Chicago Wolves released
Greg Barber (04/05) and Vlad Serov (00/01)
one-time Bears D
Brad Norton (01/02) was released by the LA Kings on Monday
Michael
Henrich (02/03), who spent last season in Switzerland, will play
in Germany this year .
