Bears vaporize Phantoms, 5-1
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
The Hershey Bears (3-2-1, 7 points) reeled off five unanswered goals to down the Adirondack Phantoms (2-5-1, 5 points) 5-1 before an announced crowd of 7,584 Saturday night at Giant Center. Ashton Rome scored a pair of goals and added a fighting major, while Hershey defensemen accounted for six assists in the teams’ first of two matchups this weekend.
Enjoying its first of eight power plays on the evening, Hershey got on the scoreboard first at 6:01 of the opening frame, with Brian Willsie blasting a shot from the top of the point on assists from Kyle Greentree and Lawrence Nycholat. The Bears would take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, courtesy of a Greentree man-advantage conversion with 42 seconds remaining in the first period.
Hershey made it 3-love on Rome’s first of the season, a wrister from the right circle, at 4:02 of the second. A trio of donnybrooks over a three-minute stretch highlighted the latter half of the stanza, with Sheldon Souray, Rome, and Trevor Bruess earning five-minute stays in the penalty box for the Bears.
Steve Pinizzotto padded Hershey’s lead to five goals during the third, firing a left circle past Phantoms netminder Johan Backlund (2-5-0) at 5:23. Andrew Rowe’s second of the year, an unassisted marker, spoiled Braden Holtby’s (3-0-1) shutout bid at 15:37.

Rochester Flags Hershey
Bears drop home opener, 3-2
By Joe Shetrom, 7641 Sports
joe@7641.com
The Hershey Bears opened the home portion of their 2010-11 schedule with a 3-2 loss to the Rochester Americans before a sellout crowd of 10,515 fans Saturday evening at Giant Center. The loss, Hershey’s first regulation defeat, places the reigning back-to-back Calder Cup champions in a tie for third place in the East Division (2-1-1, 5 points).
Brian Willsie, playing his first home game with Hershey since the 2002-2003 season, opened the scoring with a power play goal at 5:40 of the first period, with assists from 2009-10 AHL MVP Keith Aucoin and Lawrence Nycholat. Visiting Rochester (2-2-0) scored on the man advantage at 11:04, when Michal Repik potted his first, and at even strength less than four minutes apart on longtime NHL’er Michael Nylander’s second of the campaign at 14:53, to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
The Amerks tallied their third unanswered marker at 7:15 of the second – the only goal scored in the period – when Evgeny Dadonov registered his first of the year on goaltender Dany Sabourin (0-1-0), who was making his Bears debut. Andrew Gordon drew Hershey within one, collecting his team-leading third lamp-lighter, a power play strike, at 6:54 of the third stanza, but the Bears were unable to push the equalizer pass Rochester’s Jacob Markstrom (2-2-0, 33 saves) in the game’s final thirteen minutes.
